EXTREME PAINTING
Painting En Plein air in the remotest parts of the Scottish Highlands.
I paint on location in extreme conditions and locations in the Scottish Highlands. From mountain summits in deep winter to vertiginous sea cliffs on the Atlantic coast.
Why do I go to such extremes to make my paintings? Working form photos has never really worked for me as I feel they don’t have the ability to capture the raw, physical and elemental quality of the highland landscape. Painting in these locations allows me to respond directly to what I am experiencing and attempt to translate my response in paint. The journey has a sense of adventure and discovery and over the years I have learnt to adapt my technique and, more importantly, the kit I use to enable me to paint in these stunning locations. Recent new additions to my kit, such as a pack raft and a hot tent have enabled me to explore further afield and for longer.
