Louise Meny

Overview

Whilst studying for a degree in Interior Design at Edinburgh College of Art I discovered and fell in love with printmaking.

After graduating, this is what I chose to focus on, and I became a member of the Edinburgh Printmakers Workshop where I have focused on developing my skills in screen printing and etching.

Initially my work was inspired by architecture, the Edinburgh Botanical Gardens and the Botanical Glasshouses. Through the prints I produced at this time, I was able to experiment with various techniques and began to develop my style. I then went on to work on a portfolio of prints that take inspiration from the Scottish landscape. My particular interest is in compositions that incorporate dramatic skies and interesting trees. This allows for more abstract images in my etchings and a range of mark making in my screen prints. I have also worked in photo etching which allowed me to convert my mainly floral sketchbook work into etchings, playing around with more abstract compositions and colour.

Since gaining my Diploma in Botanical Illustration with distinction from Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh in 2019, I have expanded my artistic practice. I now work in both watercolour painting and printmaking with my work in each area often informing the other. The subject matter and techniques that I have developed since the diploma has led me to experiment with my printmaking and create drypoint etchings which I hand colour using watercolour paint.

My work has been exhibited across Scotland and can be found in various private collections including Millbank House, House of Lords, Westminster.
