Paola Kathuria

Overview

Born in London to Italian and Indian parents, Paola grew up with diverse cultural influences that taught her early on that there was more than one way of doing things. This gave her the freedom to indulge in both science fiction and 1950s musicals, later in degrees in both psychology and computing science.

Paola co-founded one of the first web companies in the UK in 1995. Following a successful career, she retired early to focus on her jewellery and art. She moved to Pitlochry in 2024, finding joy in beautiful landscapes and the welcoming community.

She developed her distinctive dress collages in 2020; the delightful juxtaposition between old and new, colour on text, and making something interesting out of ephemera appealed to her. Using a 1950s dress design she created when she was 13, she created collages using decorative papers collected over decades and pages from her own science fiction collection. A new two-piece fashion design scaled up nicely for bigger vintage pages; it was then a natural progression to embellish her dresses with jewellery.

Paola's framing style embraces Japanese aesthetic principles, with generous side margins that allow each piece to breathe within its frame. This approach creates a sense of quiet contemplation, letting the artwork float serenely within its space whilst honouring the philosophy that negative space is as important as the image itself. She loves how her collages convey quiet confidence from the unseen person wearing the clothes; in this case, less is certainly more.
