I can’t remember a time when I didn’t draw or paint - even drawing on the blank pages in books when I was small! It was the ‘50s and paper was in short supply!
I was born in the Scottish Borders but have lived in Edinburgh for many years. I studied at Gray’s School of Art, Aberdeen and have continued learning, exploring, experimenting in my art practice.
The Scottish landscape has always been a source of inspiration to me - the contours of the land, the patterns of fields, hedges, pathways and trees. Every area has it’s own patterns and shapes. I also love painting seascapes - the many changing faces of the sea and shore fascinate me.
Travels around Europe provide another rich source of inspiration - the architecture, colour and layout of towns and villages - the quirkiness of windows and what kind of house is hiding behind a wall - all intrigue and inspire me.
My style is expressive, abstract realism. I build up layers of colours using mixed media (acrylic, watercolour, collage, pencil, ink) to interpret landscapes, seascapes, town and cityscapes.
Through colour I try to show my response to and my sense of a place - a pop of orange, a sliver of red and a squiggle of turquoise - colours that sing together.
